Glessner House offers guided tours of the fully restored building, a National Historic Landmark. Tours are led by trained docents and last approximately 75 minutes. Self-guided tours are not available. All tours begin at the Visitors Center located inside the main Prairie Avenue entrance.
In recognition of Hamilton: The Exhibition, currently open on nearby Northerly Island, we have two Hamilton-related items on display. A brass fireplace grate comes from Hamilton’s Manhattan home, The Grange, and was acquired by the Glessners about 1898. Also, a two-volume set of the private journal of Aaron Burr, published in 1905 and presented to John Glessner that year by the author. Items may be viewed as part of regular public tours through Sunday August 25, 2019.
A National Historic Landmark, Glessner House was designed by noted American architect Henry Hobson Richardson and completed in 1887. It remains an internationally-known architectural treasure in Chicago. A radical departure from traditional Victorian architecture, the structure served as an inspiration to the young Frank Lloyd Wright and helped redefine domestic architecture.
