The GSLA’s mission is to bring neighbors together to create a vibrant, inclusive South Loop community, which must include a thriving local business community. Our Business Spotlight series is intended to increase awareness of small businesses in the area, so residents can shop locally to keep more of their dollars within the community to drive more local investment.
In this Spotlight (and just in time for tax season), we’re introducing Detour 2 Discovery Day School!
If you spend any time outside in the South Loop, you’ll notice lots of strollers. The great parks, walkability, and family-friendly vibe make our neighborhood very attractive to young families. We recently sat down with Jennifer Heim, the owner of Detour 2 Discovery Day School, which is located on the southeast corner of Wabash and 21st street, to hear her perspective on life and business in the South Loop.
What does your business do?
We provide the highest quality of early childhood education for infants through kindergartners plus a fabulous city summer camp for alumni students k-2. We also offer supplemental care for families who pre-register, which is perfect for stay-at-home parents or those with nannies who may need emergency childcare from time to time.
How long has your business been open in the South Loop?
In June it will be 26 years! We opened in 1992.
Why did you choose the South Loop as the location for your business?
Our first clients lived in Printers Row and Dearborn park, so our first location was at 1020 S State Street….plus we lived here!
Do you live in the neighborhood?
We lived in the South Loop for ten years; from 1992 until 2002. We grew our business and our children as the South Loop grew and spread southward. Now we live nearby in Streeterville, and our son attends high school at Jones College Prep.
Are you a Chicago native?
My husband and I were both born in Chicago. We grew up in the near south suburbs; our families are from the Mount Greenwood, Evergreen Park, and Beverly areas.
What do you think are the best features of our neighborhood?
I love that there is easy access to or from anywhere else in the city & suburbs. And of course, there are families…lots of families!
Detour 2 Discovery consistently earns high ratings in reviews from parents and staff, and has also been featured by Quaker and Voyage Chicago; check out the links below to learn more!
